Oscar Best Picture List

In the fall, Terrell and I looked up every movie that has been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and made a list of ones we really wanted to see (that we hadn`t seen before). Some one of us had seen once long ago but most of them neither of us had seen. Here is the list, and sometimes (if I remember) there will be a brief review of each film which will be updated as we watch them. Its been a lot of fun so far! Feel free to add suggestions of films we should watch.

KEY:

The ones we put on our list and have watched will be marked by a *. The italicized films are ones on our list that we watched prior to making this list but have included because they fall into the category. The bolded films are the ones that won the Oscar.

Find the complete Oscar list here.

2011
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
The Help (the book was soooooooooo good. Different than the book but excellently acted.)
Hugo
Moneyball (we really enjoyed this. Jonah Hill is funny, and the editing between real ball footage and the acting is amazing.)

2011
The King's Speech
*True Grit (lots of people died in this film. Matt Damon is weird as a cowboy. Didn`t fully live up to the hype but I was glad I watched it.)
*The Fighter (if you can handle all the swearing, it was REALLY good. Christian Bale is AMAZING.)
Inception
The Social Network
Toy Story 3

2009
Avatar
The Blindside
Up

2008
Slumdog Millionaire
The Reader

2007
No Country for Old Men
Atonement
Juno

2006
Little Miss Sunshine

2005
Crash

2004
*Million Dollar Baby (really sad, brilliantly acted. Clint Eastwood is the MAN.)
*The Aviator (Leo D is the best actor of our time. Yes, I said it.)
Finding Neverland
Sideways

2003
The Lord of the Rings:The Return of the King
Lost in Translation
Mystic River

2002
Chicago
*The Pianist (Days later I am still thinking about it. Half-way through I said to Terrell, “this movie makes me sick to my stomach!” Adrien Brody deserved his Oscar indeed. What a beautiful man. I want to hug him.)
*Gangs of New York (I just did not like this film. Love Leo D, but there was no character for me to cheer for and it was frightenly violent. At the end I was just like, wow, NY has a hideous history.)
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

2001
*A Beautiful Mind (heartbreaking. Russell Crowe is great.)
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Moulin Rouge!

2000
Gladiator
Chocolat
Erin Brockovich
Traffic

1999
American Beauty
The Green Mile
The Sixth Sense

1998
Shakespeare in Love
Saving Private Ryan

1997
Titanic
The Full Monty
Good Will Hunting

1996
*Shine (This was super well acted but very sad. I like it, though.)
*Jerry Maguire (Other than a few surprising gross parts, this movie is surprisingly good. Very funny with heartfelt emotional moments. Good stuff.)

1995
*Braveheart (Just brutal. But so well done. I couldn't watch some of the violence and the scene where his wife is almost raped made me cry, so upsetting. But well done and I forgot Mel was once attractive! Ha ha.)
Apollo 13
Sense and Sensibility

1994
*Forrest Gump (incredible film. Tom Hanks is the man.)
Shawshank Redemption

1991
The Silence of the Lambs
Beauty and the Beast

1990
Ghost

1989
*Dead Poet's Society (really good. The cast had great chemistry and were very likeable. So sad in the end.)
Field of Dreams

1987
Moonstruck

1982
Gandhi
E.T.

1977
Star Wars

1971
Fiddler on the Roof

1968
Funny Girl

1967
*In the Heat of the Night (Soooooo different from the book which was disappointing but Sidney Poitier is brilliant.)
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
Dr. Dolittle

1965
The Sound of Music

1964
My Fair Lady
Mary Poppins

1962
To Kill a Mockingbird

1961
West Side Story

1957
*12 Angry Men (I recommend it. Amazing cinematography - so many long scenes are in one take! Crazy!)

1956
The King and I

1943
Casablanca

1941
*Citizen Kane (The cinematography in this is ridic considering the year it was made - it revolutionized how movies were shot. Interesting story especially since it was based on a real person, and that real person ruined Orson Welles' career because of this film.)

1939
Gone with the Wind
The Wizard of Oz
Wuthering Heights

Oh wow, there have been some good movies over time...I feel they've gone downhill since then.
